Hostway Announces Support For PHP5 & Red Hat Enterprise Linux

11 January 2005

11th January, 2004 -- Hostway, the global leader in web hosting, today announced its support for PHP5 on all of its Linux shared hosting plans, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core on all of its Linux Root Dedicated Servers.

PHP5 is the latest incarnation of the popular open-source scripting language. Hostway’s decision to offer its customers PHP5 is a natural progression of the company’s long-standing support for PHP.

The move to offer both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core follows Red Hat’s decision to branch their delivery channels into Community and Enterprise releases.

“It’s our aim to bring the latest innovative tools and technologies to our customers,” said Paul Halfpenny, Product Manager at Hostway UK. “PHP5 is now an enterprise level Web development language, enabling users to build sophisticated and dynamic websites, and in turn offer visitors a rich and engaging online experience. By offering both Red Hat-managed distributions of the Linux operating system we reinforce our commitment of ensuring choice for customers of any size or need.”

PHP5 has been through extensive functionality and performance testing. It offers many new features, including the ability to use object-orientated programming for the first time.

Combining the ability to use SOAP (simple object access protocol) and XML extensions, and powered by Zend Engine II, PHP5 now includes functionality that can truly open up web services to developers working on the Linux platform. Furthermore, the inclusion of the SQLite database engine into the language means that programmers can use PHP without needing to use separate MySQL databases.

Hostway customers that would like to upgrade to PHP5 or add PHP5 to their hosting plans can do so through their existing hosting account at no extra charge.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is certified by top enterprise software and hardware vendors and is backed by the Red Hat Network and 24x7 Red Hat support. It is the premier operating platform for open source server solutions.

Red Hat Enterprise is available for a monthly or annual fee, depending on the payment method.

The Fedora Project is a group-based venture sponsored by Red Hat Linux in terms of resources. It is open to and influenced by the global Linux community. The goal of the project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software.

Fedora Core is a logical upgrade path for previous users of Red Hat Linux whose needs are consistent with the objectives of the Fedora Project.

Fedora Core is available to Hostway customers as standard on all dedicated servers for no extra cost.
