C I Host Creates 'Doompster' Filter to Trash MyDoom Virus, Cleansing Millions Of E-Mail Messages for 205,000 Clients Worldwide

27 January 2004

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- C I Host, a global leader in Web hosting, Internet infrastructure and software development -- within 24 hours of the MyDoom viral outbreak -- developed, tested and installed a virus filter it calls 'Doompster' to totally extract and trash the worm from the e- mails of its 205,000 clients.

Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host, said, "This virus is spreading as fast as anything we have ever seen, so it was 'job one' to create 'Doompster' for our clients. We are taking the infected e-mails and the attachments out of the system, allowing our clients to concentrate on business -- immediately."

Experts observed that the virus had infected one of every 12 e-mails. C I Host's network on Tuesday was logging 5,000 infected message detections per minute. Reportedly, MyDoom also is designed to release a denial of service attack, DoS, next month, targeting a well-known Unix developer.

Response times from major Web sites' home pages have fallen by about 50 percent since MyDoom's outbreak began on Monday. So far, the Internet backbone itself has been largely unaffected, running about 8 percent to 10 percent slower on Tuesday. Accordingly, C I Host technical service representatives tracked a 5 percent to 10 percent increase in tech support calls.

"The worm was well-constructed, with much of the code encrypted," Faulkner said. "So the 'Doompster' remedy wasn't an easy fix. But, we heard some customers were getting as many as 200 copies per hour. So, we put a lid on it."
