C I Host Offers Virus Filter to Competing Hosting Companies; 'Doompster' Gesture Can Speed Up e-Commerce Economy

Faulkner's security experts created a filter, dubbed "Doompster," in less than 24 hours after MyDoom slowed all Internet traffic. C I Host detected and deleted virulent e-mails from its 205,000 hosting clients. Although the Internet regained some momentum on Thursday, Faulkner warned that the worst may be yet to come.

"The denial of service attack, embedded in this virus will trigger on February 2," he said. "So, we hope other hosting companies will scrub their clients' e-mails as we have done in an attempt to keep the e-Commerce economy on the move."

C I Host's Doompster filter will work with most hosting companies' e-mail software, including Procmail, Sendmail, qMail, Exim, Postfix and QPop. The filter is not designed to assist individual users.

Faulkner said C I Host detected the virus at a decreased rate on Thursday, compared to the peak when his company saw 5,500 infected e-mails per minute.
