Viewmark to Host Genesis Mission Web Site
21 May 2004
DENVER, May 21 -- Viewmark, Inc., a web strategy, marketing and technical development firm has been contracted by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Aurora, CO to provide high-traffic hosting services for the web site of NASA's Genesis mission http://genesismission.jpl.nasa.gov. The site will temporarily move from its current location at McREL to Viewmark's Denver servers in June, in anticipation of increased public interest as the Genesis sample return capsule concludes its journey on September 8 , 2004 in an extraordinary mid-air capture.
In making the announcement, Viewmark President Glenn Alsup noted that worldwide attention of the re-entry and acquisition of the capsule will result in enormous interest directed to the web site. "We have successfully demonstrated to McREL and NASA in previous projects, our ability to manage such an enormous burden of traffic and serve pages to the user quickly with no delays." Viewmark previously hosted the Genesis mission web site when the spacecraft was launched in July of 2001.
Unusually high interest in a single web site within a relatively short time span can often overload the server it resides on, with "page not found" errors for web users. In order to avoid such a problem Viewmark Chief Technical Officer Sverre Froyen, a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University, developed a unique traffic load-balancing process for the first Genesis mission web site, and will apply similar principles to the new one. He is anticipating even greater traffic this time, since use of the Internet has increased dramatically in the 2 1/2 years since Genesis' launch.
The Genesis capsule will target a desolate landing site at the U.S. Army and Air Force Test and Training Range in Utah. The capsule, suspended from a parachute, will be intercepted by one of a team of helicopters in order to preserve its solar wind collection cargo.
