European Provider TeleCity Helps Increase International Education

28 May 2004

London, -- 28 May 2004 -- TeleCity (LSE: TCY), the award-winning European provider of colocation and data centre services, today announced a partnership with the British Council to build, manage and support the Global Gateway portal, which they are developing on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). TeleCity’s experience in building and managing infrastructure and systems which support portal platforms was required to help with the initial set-up of the Global Gateway website and ongoing management of the network infrastructure.

The Global Gateway is the DfES’s new pioneering website enabling those involved in education across the world to engage in creative partnerships. These can take the form of internet links, of joint curriculum activity, projects for the professional development of teachers and school leaders or any other collaborative opportunities. It provides a library of accredited resources for teachers, headteachers, pupils, young people, parents and LEAs and features a partner-finding database which enables schools all over the globe to link up, share information and embark on joint projects. The Global Gateway is expected to have an international impact through fostering collaboration with education ministries and schools in other countries.

TeleCity worked with the British Council to design, build and deploy the system infrastructure for the portal. This involved installing an operating system and various applications including a bespoke package of colocation, IP Multihome (which guarantees resilient connectivity), Managed Security (including firewall and antivirus), data backup and recovery services, and monitoring and network infrastructure management. The platform will be operated and managed at one of TeleCity’s Docklands premises.

“TeleCity welcomes the opportunity to help public sector organisations realise their network infrastructure goals,” comments Ricky Hudson, CEO of TeleCity. “We are therefore delighted to be associated with such a high profile project on behalf of the DfES and be involved in the development and management of the Global Gateway. We are committed to the public sector agenda and are happy to be involved in making Broadband Britain a reality for all organisations.”
