Level 3 Signs Data Networking Contract with CSC
4 August 2004
BROOMFIELD, Colo., -- Aug. 4, 2004 -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced that it is supplying Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC), a leading global information technology (IT) services company, with a networking solution to support its recently announced agreement with Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Under the terms of the agreement, CSC will be using (3)Flex Network IP VPN services, provided by Level 3, to connect Sears store locations nationwide. Level 3’s data networking services will allow Sears to replace multiple legacy networks with a single MPLS-based network that converges voice, video, and data traffic.
“Level 3’s technology leadership and high quality network services make them an integral component of the IT solution that CSC will provide Sears,” said Don Durbin, CSC vice president, Americas Outsourcing. “Level 3’s IP VPN service provides the MPLS-based network that will enable future network convergence for Sears, improving both network manageability and costs.”
Sears, Roebuck and Co. is a leading broadline retailer providing merchandise and related services. The company offers a wide range of home merchandise, apparel and automotive products and services through more than 2,300 Sears-branded and affiliated stores in the U.S. and Canada.
“We’re extremely pleased to be providing CSC and Sears with our MPLS-based data networking services,” said Scott Schaefer, group vice president of IP and Data Services for Level 3. “We believe that both CSC and Sears will derive significant cost and ease-of-use benefits from our IP VPN service and experience excellent quality and the ability to distinguish class of service levels by traffic type.”
The MPLS-based (3)Flex Network IP VPN service provides a fully meshed, secure network with end-to-end, customer-controlled prioritization of traffic. Level 3 is a pioneer of MPLS (multi-protocol label switching), having helped lead the standards development of the technology beginning in 1998, and has been operating an MPLS network since 1999.
The (3)Flex Network IP VPN service complements Level 3’s existing suite of MPLS-based data networking services, which also includes (3)Flex Ethernet, ATM, and Frame Relay offerings. This suite of (3)Flex data services, including the IP VPN solution, extends the ease of use and cost effectiveness of transporting data across wide area networks (WANs), and provides secure data and voice transmission to and from more than 75 major markets in the U.S. and Europe.
