Mount Union College Deploys Enterasys Secure Network

5 August 2004

ANDOVER, MA -- August 5, 2004 -- Enterasys Networks (NYSE: ETS), the Secure Networks CompanyTM, today announced that Mount Union College has chosen Enterasys' industry-leading Secure NetworksTM solution to protect sensitive data and prevent internal and external threats to its network.

Ensuring that the confidential data on the network is safe from unauthorized access or damage is a top priority for the College. In addition, with 2,100 students, 125 faculty and 200 staff attaching to the network with laptops, PCs, PDAs and other devices, the risk of damage and network downtime from internal and external threats is exceptionally high. The College also uses a secure identification card system throughout the campus, which requires a high level of network security to function at peak efficiency.

Mount Union, of Alliance, Ohio, turned to Enterasys for a complete solution that provides the performance, control and—most importantly—the security its growing network requires. "Enterasys' Secure Networks solution fits our needs perfectly," said Tina Stuchell, director of IT for Mount Union College. "We required a secure solution to deliver the continuity vital to a network that is in use 24 hours a day. Our network serves 45 buildings on campus, and Enterasys provides us with a consolidated solution to meet our students' needs while enabling the IT staff to centrally control bandwidth management and enforce acceptable use policy."

Jack Ewing, president of Mount Union College, praised Enterasys for its excellent work over the years. "We have had a strong relationship with Enterasys for over a decade. When it was time to make a major upgrade to our network, we put the project out for bid and it quickly became obvious that we should not make a change. When we considered cost, service, support and reliability, we decided the best choice was Enterasys."

Mount Union has deployed an all-Enterasys network of MatrixTM switches and XSR routers as well as NetSightTM Atlas Automated Security Manager software. NetSight Atlas takes security events from Enterasys' DragonTM Intrusion Response, locates the exact port on the Matrix switch where attacks are entering the network, and takes action against only the affected port/user, stopping the threat. The College also has secure wireless capability in three major buildings and plans to expand wireless networking to the entire campus over the next year.

"Colleges, like any enterprise, need their networks continuously available to support a wide range of activities, and they also need to protect the information on those networks from unauthorized access," said Cynthia Gallant, senior vice president of Secure Networks for Enterasys. "Students, faculty and staff use the network constantly and more automated devices are being attached to it every day, which increases network complexity and the risk of security breaches. Learning, research and administrative work can screech to a halt if the network goes down. Only Enterasys can deliver the robust performance and granular security to keep even the most complex networks running safely and smoothly and enable colleges and enterprises to comply with new regulations regarding the protection of private information."

Mount Union College is the latest in a long line of education institutions using Enterasys Secure Networks solutions. "Our history of delivering customized solutions that meet the needs of the higher education market was a key factor in Mount Union's choice of Enterasys," said Mike Trites, regional vice president of sales for Enterasys. "When it comes to choosing a network partner, colleges and enterprises alike want to work with a vendor that understands their unique needs and can help resolve the challenges they face. We demonstrated to the Mount Union team we could provide the network solutions and personalized service to enable the College to meet its critical goals of complying with FERPA data-privacy regulations and keeping the network safe from threats and available at all times."
