ST. LOUIS -- Aug. 16, 2004 -- SAVVIS Communications (NASDAQ:SVVS), a leading global IT utility, today announced it won a contract to provide Intelligent Hosting(SM) services to major cable network, C-SPAN, a private, non-profit company created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a public service, and currently available in 88 million households.
Under terms of the contract, C-SPAN chose SAVVIS' managed hosting services to ensure failsafe access to the C-SPAN.org website, which provides important information on programming offered on C-SPAN's family of networks -- C-SPAN, C-SPAN2, C-SPAN3, C-SPAN Radio -- as well as exclusive Web-only content related to C-SPAN programming and associated topics. C-SPAN.org is an online resource that provides live and on-demand C-SPAN programming at no charge to users. The on-demand, fully searchable video archive features C-SPAN's campaign and convention programming, links to other political sites, an interactive campaign event calendar, online discussion boards, and teaching resources.
In addition, SAVVIS will provide C-SPAN with its Global Load Balancing services suite, thereby enabling them to distribute traffic evenly between data centers, thus maximizing the efficiency of the C-SPAN network while controlling costs. As part of this, C-SPAN can leverage SAVVIS' Intelligent Traffic Management that enables them to personally administer load-balancing activity if they choose.
SAVVIS already provides the content distribution network services that power C-SPAN.org's video archive of campaign and convention programming -- an invaluable resource for viewers, reporters, teachers and students.
"Our goal was to increase the overall capacity and availability of our Web services, in addition to expanding disaster recovery and system redundancy coverage, all the while controlling costs," C-SPAN Executive Vice President, Robert G. Kennedy, said. "SAVVIS' documented superiority in managed hosting and network performance - based on advances in virtualized services delivery - made them the clear choice."
"SAVVIS is proud to count C-SPAN as a new customer and we believe this contract win is another reflection of the fact that our managed hosting services deliver superior value," SAVVIS President and Chief Operating Officer, Jack Finlayson, said. "Because SAVVIS Intelligent Hosting(SM) services are based on advanced technology and automation tools, they enable businesses to have a dedicated server and private network, without the high costs and limited flexibility typically associated with this type of solution."
SAVVIS' Intelligent Hosting(SM) solutions combine 24 world-class data centers with strong engineering expertise, a global IP network, and award-winning customer support operations. Available options range from pre-packaged, fully managed solutions geared toward general business needs, to solutions tailored specifically to individual requirements that can either be fully managed by SAVVIS or supported through a combination of both customer and SAVVIS efforts. SAVVIS is currently ranked as the number two hosting services provider by IDC and has more than 12,000 servers under management.
