Web Host Security

Written by: Sam Lee

A problem with communicating across the Internet is that it is an inherently insecure medium comprise of vast networks and millions of computers. Therefore, it is vital to secure data, when required, to protect business, consumer and privacy interests. Without the legal and technical framework in place, the conduct of electronic commerce would be very difficult.

Selecting a web host provider that offers firewalls and other security measures to protect your web site and e-mail accounts is essential. Sudden disruptions or unexpected downtimes can cost business through lower revenues and lost business opportunities.

To protect C.I.A. (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) there are four general elements to examine in terms of web security implementations:

  • Physical Access

  • Online Access

  • Policies and Procedures

  • Privacy

Physical Access

Web hosting companies who house their servers in secure physical environments do so to protect the equipment, and its business. Measures, such as, security surveillance, and biometric devices are used to stop intruders from accessing the company's server (ultimately your web site), and prevention of theft.

Browsing the web service provider's web site is often a method to see if they inform the public if their web servers are monitored and protected onsite 24 hours a day. Some companies invest thousands or even millions of dollars into software and hardware to safe guard their client's web data, however, if servers are not confined physically then it is useless.

Unexpected events such as fire or flooding can cause havoc to web hosting equipment. So when researching for your web host provider, examine their network information and check if their data center (the environment designed to house web servers and other telecommunication equipment) has safeguard features. These features include but are not limited to temperature control, fire suppression systems, raised flooring (in response to flooding), power backup generators, and locked cabinets. Locked cabinets can prevent unauthorized personnel who have access to the data center from reaching your web service provider's servers.
