What is a DOCTYPE definition that i see at the top of some HTML pages? |

| According to HTML standards, each HTML document begins with a DOCTYPE declaration that specifies which version of HTML the document uses. The DOCTYPE declaration is useful primarily to SGML-based tools like HTML validators, which must know which version of HTML to use in checking the document's syntax. Internet browsers generally ignore DOCTYPE declarations. |
