| There are certainly aspects or common traits amongst web host scammers that you should watch for and avoid. These include:
- Registering the domain in the web host’s name rather that your own. Most web hosting providers today offer facilities for its new or existing clients to register domain names through the company but it is important to ensure the domain is in your name. Your domain name is like your business license, you certainly don’t want someone else’s name on it.
- Unlimited bandwidth or data transfer. There are rarely any web hosts that offer unlimited bandwidth since it can be too easily abused by users and the resources require to sustain a decent level of service is beyond most web hosts. Often, they try to hide conditions regarding unlimited bandwidth in it acceptable of usage policies.
- Long term contracts and one time payment. Web hosts that scam do not often stay up long and so puts its clients on long term contracts and demand one time payments to cover the length of the contract. Try to avoid long term contracts until you have faith in the web hosting provider.
- Invalid or no contact information. It is not unusual for unscrupulous web hosts to hide its own business/postal address and hinder its customers from contacting them. When selecting a web host, ensure you can contact them using multiple avenues.
The important thing is to thoroughly research your potential web host before signing up and you will save a lot of heart break later on.
