I have a DSL connection running into my home, is it possible for me to become a web hosting provider?

In reality, yes it is possible for you to become a web host but there are certainly a range of issues and dangers that you must address. If you intend to offer commercial services, your customers will expect good quality web servers and reliable Internet connections to host his or her web site. The problem with personal DSL connections is that it is prone to failure that maybe out of your control. For example, if the local exchange breaks down, or your ISP has issues, this can affect the performance of your web hosting services.

Even with a business DSL connection, it is still difficult to provide the quality on par with dedicated server solutions, such as, the security of redundant connections and physical servers locked in a secure facility. In addition, most ISP does not allow personal DSL users to host web sites or have the DNS authority over its IP address.

The final advice would be to purchase a reseller web hosting plan, or even a low cost dedicated server to offer your services as this will provide you with greater flexibility and reliability over the long term.
