| For web hosting beginners, or even general email users, it can be difficult to differential between an email POP account and an email alias. However, I will do my best to explain the difference between the two.
An email alias address is often referred to as a forwarding account, and is used as an alternative email address that forwards to another account. For example, you have an email account called jderrick@domain.com that you use to send and receive email from; an email alias john.derrick@domain.com can be setup so other email users can send mail to that email alias and it will be redirected to your jderrick@domain.com email account.
A POP (Post Office Protocol) account is its own independent e-mail account that can be used for storing, sending and receiving e-mail, as opposed to an email alias, which merely forwards mail to another account. Also, once an email address is configured as a POP email account, it operates privately and independently from your main standard/default mail system. Any mail sent to a private pop mail account can only be received by logging into that account with the username and password you have assigned it.
