Why is there such a huge price difference between certain domain name registrars? Is it OK to go for the cheaper alternative? |

| This really depends on which domain name registrar you go through for your domain registrations. For example, Network Solutions is probably one of the more expensive registrars in business - $34.95/year for common top level domains - but they are able to charge a premium. The company was initially the organization that managed the domain name system and registrations before being forced to delegate this to a private, non-profit body called the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Because of this they already have a fairly established customer base and do not have to compete as hard to attain customers, hence, have little pressure to lower prices.
Smaller domain name registrars, such as, Dotster and GoDaddy are still able to compete effectively because they now able to directly register domain names through the help of ICANN where in the past, Network Solutions managed the Domain Name System (DNS) by itself. Thus, it isn’t a problem to go with a cheaper alternative. Just make sure whoever you select is ICANN accredited and do some research before selecting the registrar.
