| In a shared or virtual web hosting environment, the web hosting provider hosts your web site on a platform or web server dedicated to serving content from web sites. Each web site has the capacity to have its own domain name and allocated amounts of web space and data transfer. The server itself is connected to a local network and the local network is connected to an Internet backbone. Although, the web server can be physically hosted in another country, you can still access through your PC, hence, the term virtual web hosting.
The “shared” aspects means that each web site will have to share server resources, such as, CPU processing power, bandwidth and memory with other web sites hosted on the same server. During peak periods, all web sites on the server may suffer from poor performance and response times since all are competing for limited resources.
