I’ve come across publications that mention some premium web hosting providers employ server clustering or load balancing? What is it?

For heavy trafficked web sites, it is difficult to maintain a high level of response and service to visitors from just one server alone. In order to over come this, web hosting providers utilized a concept known as load balancing. Basically, multiple servers are clustered together, sometimes for specific roles, to share the balance of the load. For example, a web site may be mirrored on three separate web servers and as users visit the web site, software determines which web server has the lightest load and redirects the visitors appropriately.

The load balancing concept is practically invisible to the visitor as it aims to conspire to appear as a single server.
