Created in the late 1960s by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie at Bell Laboratories, Unix is a server-oriented operating system that was aimed to support a multi-user environment. The architecture behind Unix was to provide a simple modular operating system, yet sophisticated, to support an array of multi-user and network tasks.

Linux is a variant of Unix, created by Linus Torvalds, that shares common characteristics but is not identical by any means. It can run on a variety of hardware from Intel to PowerPC CPU systems. The most significant aspect about Linux is that the kernel or the core of the operating is freely distributed so developers all over the globe can modify the source code and use it for their own purposes without any licensing or IP concerns.
