Why do web hosting companies employ Unix/Linux operating systems without paying any licensing costs?

Most Unix and Linux operating systems are supported by the community and thus do not require any licensing fees. For example, Linux is developed under the GNU general public license agreement where developers are free to modify the source but is obligated to release the modifications back into the community. This process ensures that Linux continues to improve through the efforts of the community and do not become a monopoly.

For web hosting providers, this allows them to deploy software that is both reliable and does not incur any license fees.
