What is IIS and how does it work in the whole scheme of things?

IIS stands for Internet Information Service and is a suite of applications that includes both a HTTP (Hyper Text Transport Protocol) and FTP (File Transport Protocol) server that operates from a Microsoft Windows operating system. IIS competes fiercely with Apache and has established itself in the small-to-medium sized business markets.

The other tools encapsulated with IIS is comprised of a set of programs that help web masters administrate web site configurations, search engines and application interfaces for web scripts to interact with software, such as, Microsoft Access running on the Windows server.
