Unique visitors refers to how many visitors you have browsing through your web site. They can view multiple pages throughout the web site but does not increase the visitor count. Unique users are important because it is an indication of success of a website.

Web site hits on the other hand refers to how many files, images and pages the visitor might retrieve during his or her session, and is not an effective way to measure the performance or popularity of your web site.
